Highway To Hell - Afghanistan
The groundwork for Khorst-Gardez road or so called "Highway to Hell" started in May last year. Since then it was reported 13 workers dead and 3 are still missing. The road is part of a grand design to break five strategic centres from economic and social dependency on neighbouring Pakistan. By linking them together and to the national ring-road, they might be hooked back into Kabul's orbit. It is 100km long and it was funded by US.
Despite being a controversial choice, the Indian company was selected because it was one of only two companies prepared to do the job.
The Taliban have declared war on this USD114 millions highway. A special report (SBS Dateline) by Paul McGeough and cameraman David Brill who travelled to Afghanistan's south-east, details the story. See report in You Tube here .
Luckily, our New East Coast Highway 2nd Phase which is under construction does not invite any declaration of war from anybody . For comparison purpose, our highway is 169km long and costing RM3.7 billions ( about USD 1 billion).
