Understanding Engineers (4)

A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers.

The engineer fumed, "What's with those blokes? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"

The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"

Understanding Engineers (3)

An unknown Joker once said,

The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"

The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"

The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"

The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

No offense to the graduate of arts degree....

Understanding Engineers (2)

What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers? They say...

Mechanical engineers build weapons and...

civil engineers build targets.

But for the mechanical bridges across the Chicago River below, they were built together by Mechanical and Civil Engineers..

I say...don't look for the difference..find ways to work together for the benefits of human being..

Understanding Engineers (1)

To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.

To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

My 2 cents notes : Engineers are taught to be very particular when designing things i.e optimize the design, a glass designed to hold 100ml should be filled up at least up to 90ml, otherwise  give them a smaller glass ....if not the glass will be considered 'over designed' or 'under utilized'.

Highway To Hell - Afghanistan

The groundwork for Khorst-Gardez road or so called "Highway to Hell" started in May last year. Since then it was reported 13 workers dead and 3 are still missing. The road is part of a grand design to break five strategic centres from economic and social dependency on neighbouring Pakistan. By linking them together and to the national ring-road, they might be hooked back into Kabul's orbit. It is 100km long and it was funded by US.

Despite being a controversial choice, the Indian company was selected because it was one of only two companies prepared to do the job.

The Taliban have declared war on this USD114 millions highway.  A special report (SBS Dateline) by Paul McGeough and cameraman David Brill who travelled to Afghanistan's south-east, details the story. See report in You Tube here .

Luckily, our New East Coast Highway 2nd Phase which is under construction does not invite any declaration of war from anybody . For comparison purpose, our highway is 169km long and costing RM3.7 billions ( about USD 1 billion).

Tale or Maybe a True Story of Bakun Dam?

Very interesting article about the history of Bakun Hydroelectric Plant which the idea to build it was initially brought forward in 60's and was given a go ahead instruction in 1986 by no other than our TDM. ( Latest entry in TDM's blog was about HUKUM ALLAH..read here). I just wonder whether TDM thought about HUKUM ALLAH when he approved the Bakun project or when he sacked his TPM, Dato'Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Enough said about that....to read the article that I mentioned on the Bakun Dam..read here.

Bumbung Stadium Sultan Mizan Runtuh..

Hari ini ada check reinforcement bar untuk tiang jambatan diprojek aku...tiba2 dapat call dari Pok Teh. "tahu dok lg, stadium runtuh", kata dia.."dok tahu, stadium mana?" kata ku.."Stadium sultan mizan..Atap hok lendut tu runtuh, aku kat stadium ni,dengar khabar ada orang cedera.." terang pok teh.

Terkedu juga aku mendengarnya... dah dua kali aku sekeluarga duduk dibawah atap hok lendut tu...

Sukma 2008....

Perasmian FEI World Endurance Championship 2008......

Sebagai Jurutera, inilah saat2 yang mendebarkan sekiranya projek tersebut adalah dibawah pengawasannya, apa lagi sekiranya beliau merupakan 'designer' projek tersebut. Luckily, I was not involved in this project.
